Table of 5 at our “5-star dive bar”

For long-time Zu Blog readers, you may remember me blogging last fall about my family’s trip to Puerto Rico. They were there last November to celebrate Penelope’s birthday and had such a great time, they went back recently to celebrate Elijah’s birthday. I stayed in St. Croix with the Newfies at our “dog spa,” where I made friends and (again) gained weight eating poop in the yard. No shame here, in fact, I take great pride in being able to sniff out all the yard candies before the other dogs do. It’s a gift, really. Good thing human dad knows how to brush dog teeth!

I can’t wait to tell you all about my family’s time in Puerto Rico. I’ve heard some GREAT stories. But first, I want to tell you all about the restaurant they took me to upon their return: Cheeseburger in America’s Paradise... or as most of us call it... Cheeseburgers.

This gem of a restaurant on the far east end of the island is known as “a 5-star dive bar” for good reason. There are a few small buildings (one with a bar, one with a kitchen), a tented yard space for sitting, and another sitting area up on a deck. Every time I’m there, it feels like a laid-back yard party with some of the most delicious food I’ve ever smelled (and occasionally tasted).

Actually, the food smells and looks SO divine, it’s tough to wait patiently for my humans to share. Sometimes I whimper. Sometimes I squeak. And every now and then, I let a little bark slip out, just to gently remind them I’m down there, ready to assist with any falling food situations or tasty treats they want to share. Fortunately, my humans usually let me try a tiny bit of what they’re having, if I’m a really good boy... and let’s be honest, when am I not a good boy?!?

As we enjoyed our time together, I got to consume some of human dad’s tasty tacos, some of Elijah’s slow-roasted beef, and Penelope’s blackened mahi with sweet potato fries. I offered to help with human mom’s grilled mahi too, but said I’d pass on the lettuce... What am I... a rabbit?

After eating, exploring the construction, and receiving all sorts of attention and pets from strangers for being my adorable self, it was time to head home. It’s good to have my humans back. We miss each other when we’re apart and I know they were happy to have a 5th at their dinner table.
