Birthday Festivities, One Formal Protest, and Cats Being Cats

My dad’s birthday was earlier this week and tonight he officially began his birthday festivities. My sister, Lunalu, guarded his gifts all week like a highly trained security detail. Sometimes it looked like she was sleeping on the job, but she insists she was simply in a state of deep, meditative focus.

Tonight was finally the night to open the gifts! Although that sounds exciting, I do need to report some sad news. Despite my obvious qualifications and demonstrated enthusiasm, Nick did not let me open a single present. Not one! I was very clear about my dissatisfaction. I protested playfully! And sternly! He remained unmoved.

In positive news, I was invited to partake in s’mores (though not the chocolate part because chocolate is no bueno for dogs). I even secured the seat of honor right next to the birthday guy. The Newfies received mallows and gave Nick the gift of allowing him to pet them.

Even though the cats weren’t technically invited to the party, they still found their way into the graham crackers. I guess cats just do whatever cats want.

If I’m honest, I was really glad to see my brother, Lynx, back to his sneaky ways. He had a scary week with a bladder obstruction and even had to live in the bathroom for a bit. I’m so glad he's on his way to a full recovery. We all agree the birthday gifts were wonderful (especially the ones Elijah and Penelope made), and the marshmallows were tasty — but having our Lynx with us to celebrate another family birthday… that was the sweetest gift of all.
