The Vet Said I'm Special...

Last week, I had to visit the vet because I couldn’t put any weight on my left front leg. I know exactly how it happened, but I'm going to keep that little detail to myself. Some stories are better left between siblings. Let’s just say Kona and I were wrestling, and things got… enthusiastic. It’s possible she rumbled on me, but I’m not pointing paws. Plus, I don’t want you to think I can’t take her down. I could if I wanted… even though she outweighs me by, like, a solid 115 pounds.

Anyway, after limping around for a bit, my humans got worried and decided to take me to the vet. They wanted to make sure nothing was broken. I felt pretty anxious being at the clinic. I didn’t like the noises or the smells, and I especially detested when they took my temperature rectally. If you don’t know what that means, DO NOT google it. You won’t like what you see. Once the thermometer incident was over, they asked me to walk around the room. I gave it my best shot, but it wasn’t exactly graceful. That’s when they suggested x-rays. I’m no stranger to photo shoots—adorable comes naturally—but these pictures? Let’s just say there was a lot less luscious coat and a lot more skeleton chic.

The good news? The x-rays showed no broken bones—just some soft tissue damage. The doctor said I need rest (which I’ve been doing plenty of, mostly on my mom) and a little medicine that I really enjoy, since it comes with a spoonful of peanut butter.

The vet also told my family that I’m a “special” pup. Obviously, we already knew that about me. But then she added, “What I mean is, he’s got some really special bones and joints.” Apparently, my bones and joints are… unique. For starters, I’ve got a pretty impressive bone spur that should bother me but doesn’t seem to. Also, I naturally stand in near-perfect ballet first position. Apparently, not all dogs do that?!? Oh, and, there’s something interesting going on with my bone marrow. The vet decided to take some extra pictures of that so the radiologist could take a closer look.

We’re not too worried about it right now. It’s probably just a genetic thing—or maybe from an old injury or not getting all the right nutrients during that first year on the streets when I didn’t have a home yet. Even though I might not stand or move like all the other pups, I’m hopeful that I’ll be just fine. Although, it’ll be nice when the radiologist confirms it. But hey, in the meantime, at least nothing is broken AND a medical professional officially diagnosed me with what we’ve long known—I’m special.
